Current History

Bene-D-Duct has been established to help every small Canadian business (outside of Quebec) create their own Private Health Services Plan (often called Drug and Dental Benefit Plans) without having to purchase it through an insurance company.

Tom Gillett, Vice President, Sales and one of our founders has over 17 years of experience in the benefit field both as a product actuary and as an independent licensed life and health insurance agent in Ontario. He has frequently seen many small business owners or proprietors reject the purchase of an insurance plan for drug and dental coverage. He has discovered that their decision is usually based upon the premium being too high compared with the current expected usage of these benefits. They decide to fund their medical and dental expenses out of their own pocket rather than pay into the more expensive plans being offered by the insurance companies.

He has also seen the insurance company reject or reduce the medical coverage for tiny businesses that require medical evidence of insurability to qualify, and usually they do not provide full coverage for all dental procedures.

Tom reasoned that, rightly or wrongly, this rejection of insurance and paying medical and dental bills directly was going to continue at least for some proportion of the self-employed. He knew that
these self-employed were missing a significant tax savings, in that, a medical or dental reimbursement cheque is not treated as income to the individual receiving it, and yet the cost of providing a benefit plan is fully tax deductible to the business.

He also knew many large firms enter into what is called a
"Cost Plus" Private Health Services Plan whereby the large firm establishes a benefit plan without using an insurance company and hire a plan administrator to payout valid benefit reimbursements to the eligible employees. The administrator charges the firm the actual amount of reimbursement cheques plus an administration fee, thus explaining the term "Cost Plus".

So  Bene-D-Duct was created so that those small businesses who have rejected purchasing insurance could at least provide a tax effective benefit plan using the "Cost Plus" provisions of the Income Tax Act. Furthermore, it allows very small businesses to include very rich benefits (such as braces or 100% coverage) that most insurance companies will not offer immediately to these business.
